Understanding The Biblical Passage In Earth As It Is In Heaven

In Earth as it is in Heaven is a famous passage of the Bible. The Scripture is found in the New Testament in two separate books, which are the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The passage has been used as a song, a benediction in houses of worship, and has even been embossed on religious novelty objects.

However, this passage of Scripture has frequently been misquoted. People often alter the first part of the phrase to read on Earth, rather than the latter being preceded with the word in, as the Bible states. Many individuals do not realize that in doing so, the exact meaning of the Scripture is changed. Both the new and old Testaments are filled with what are regarded by theologians as types and shadows.

Types and shadows can be symbols, events, or people used to signify future or past incidences. Symbolism of this kind is often used by theologians to prove there is an overall harmony within the 66 books of which the Bible is comprised.

This reference to our planet is used throughout these books to symbolize the whole of mankind. This is easy to see when one considers the various Scriptures that state man is made from Earthly dust and after death will return to the same. Therefore, when the world is referred to in the Lord’s Prayer, the underlying meaning may very well be a reference to mankind.

This is why numerous theologians ascribe to the belief that this famous statement in the Lord’s prayer concerning his will being done in the world as well as in heaven actually refers to his will being done within the hearts of mankind. For some, the impact of the Scripture takes a stronger flavor even if it does not completely alter the prayer’s meaning.

Old Testament passages state that believers were once told to rid their promised land of literal evil giants and then proceed to possess the land. This land is also considered a type and shadow of our planet as a whole. This leads many to believe that ridding their lives of evil, just as the Biblical characters rid their physical land of evil giants, is the embodiment of accomplishing His will in Earth as it is in Heaven.
