The job of the physical therapist centers on rehabilitation of the human body into the best possible condition. For those who aspire to have this job, it is useful to know beforehand that it involves more than a physical healing process, though.

Even if the answer is yes, the road towards being a full physical therapist is long. A physical therapy job involves more than the physical elements of the body and the physical therapist has to deal with powerful logic and emotions as strong. The clientele of the physical therapy department range from the optimism-charged people to individuals who are trapped in despair. Physical therapists defy the patient’s conception of hopelessness and when the energy then goes up and becomes too high, they are also the ones to tone it down.

A lot of people have vague idea about physical therapy and physical therapy professionals. Basically, a physical therapist (PT) interacts with individuals, both old and young, who are suffering from issues that limit bodily movements. The physical therapist identifies the problems that the patient suffers from, problems that inhibit bodily movements and action. After diagnosis, it is also his job to devise attack plans on the issue and supervise and carry out its implementation.

The job is as physically exhausting as emotionally tormenting. And though the work setting is flexible, (most therapy sessions can be done in the clinic or offices, private home, nursing centres, care facilities, etc) so is their job descriptions. They work side by side with case managers and physicians as well as oversee athletic trainers and physical therapy aides and assistants. Physical therapists also perform non-care jobs such as health care, health policy administration and as health care executives. So, is the job satisfying? On average, a professional PT receives earns about $ 70, 000 depending on the industry.

Physical therapy are a huge magnet and many physical therapy schools are open for interested people. Competition for placement at reputable institution starts at the very gates. Although online physical therapy schools have since proliferated, most of them are not accredited since laboratory and clinical activities is 20 percent of the total physical therapy course load, on average. It is because of the almost 20 percent of the course curriculum is about laboratory and clinical performance. On average, a master degree takes a little more than two years while doctoral programs means almost three more years. Choice of physical therapy school is based on faculty credentials, education costs and the learning facilities. But it is important to consider too the chance to do volunteer work. A good school like USCLA in California and Washington University in Missouri is always worth the money because most of the time, you can only be as good as your mentors.

Fibromyalgia can be very difficult to cope with successfully. Dealing with the physical and psychological effects of fibromyalgia can be devastating. You are beyond exhausted and sometimes the energy is just not there to perform your daily routine. Massage chairs can be very helpful to get you and your body in a better state of relaxation and comfort.

Unfortunately, there is not much knowledge regarding this condition, other than we know it is real. Although there are mysteries regarding it involved. Coping with fibromyalgia is work. Here are some things that you can do to find some relief with this condition. These coping strategies are explained below.

Medication: As with any medical condition with painful symptoms, your doctor may prescribe medication. Some medications may be for dealing with the psychological side as depression can occur. Other medications may be to ease, dull or stop the pain on a temporary basis. There may be some natural ways to help you in this respect and be sure to ask your health professional which options may be right for you.

Nutrition: Your body needs substantial energy to deal with fibromyalgia. Good nutrition is important. You need to make sure that you eat a balanced diet every day and limit your sweets. Give your body and muscles the nourishment that they deserve.

Rest: You need to make sure you give your body sufficient and consistent rest. Get your sleeping patterns consistent, so they your body has time to heal itself. Make the most of your sleeping environment. Make sure your bed is comfortable with soft pillows and nice sheets. Try using an electric blanket to warm your bed and to help reduce the occurrence of muscle spasms. Your bedroom should be a relaxing place and promote relaxation and tranquility.

Mental thinking: One has to keep a positive perspective on life. No one will deny that suffering can be hard with fibromyalgia, but one cannot let it get the better of you. A good, positive perspective is invaluable. A negative one can start a cycle of depression and other consequences. There are always positives in life as well as negatives. You have to ask yourself if the glass is half-empty or half-full.

Exercise: Exercise and stretch your body. We all know it is important to get exercise. This is even truer for a patient with fibromyalgia. Water aerobics seem to work best for persons suffering from any condition that involves painful movements.

Massage Treatments: Stiffness, aches and pain can cause discomfort to many people. Massage therapy has been applied through the centuries with proven relief of aches, pains and stiffness. Many massage treatments have been developed to effectively relieve many sorts of pain symptoms. Massage therapy done on a periodic basis helps to improve flexibility and increase range of motion.

It is important to adapt new routines to new situations. Finding a reliable and consistent routine when the pain can be debilitating is important. Massage chairs are important assets when combating the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Massage therapy is an effective way to increase flexibility while reducing the associated discomfort. The key with massage chairs is that they are available when you are. This is certainly an important issue in todays world.

Fibromyalgia patients cannot totally alleviate all of the symptoms that plague them. However you can learn to cope more effectively. You have to establish new habits and take care of your body.
A vital aspect of what stroke exercises to perform is determined by what part of the brain has been damaged by the stroke event. A stroke occurs when blood to the area is compromised and this results in decreased oxygen. It can also be called a CVA or cerebrovascular accident. The problems experienced post stroke are a result of the extent of the injury which relates to how much of the brain area was affected. Also relating to problems experienced is which side of the brain or part of the brain has been damaged.

A vitally important component of post stroke recovery is stroke exercises. Ground breaking scientific research about stroke recovery and the brain has shown a process called ‘neuroplasticity’. This word is a combination of the words neurology (the brain and nervous system) and plasticity (in this case soft and moldable). So this basically means the brain is an ever changing structure or organ. It is not set in stone, rigid or fixed. This finding supports nicely what we in the rehabilitation area have seen for decades, is people regaining and improving the use of their brain through exercise.

One aspect of stroke exercises can focus should focus on cognition. Cognition can be defined as the processing of thought for example recalling a telephone number. For those that have suffered a CVA on the left side of the brain it is common to have some language related cognitive problems. This is usually referred to as an aphasia. Typically there can be difficulty with expressing speech or understanding speech despite nothing being wrong with speech production or hearing of the speech. The problem has to do with the brain’s processing of language which affects the understanding and expression of it. Cognitive exercises are therefore very important for post stroke recovery.

A frequent aspect of stroke recovery is motor rehabilitation. Motor with respect to the brain refers to the movement of the body and it’s limbs. Post stroke people may have difficulty with movement due to a flaccid limb or poor muscle tone or they may have rigidity due to spasticity. Both result in poverty or lack of movement and restoring co-ordination and movement is essential. The quality of life of a stroke survivor can be greatly enhanced by restoring the ability to perform everyday tasks such as clothing oneself, walking, getting up from a seated position and feeding.

Sensory disturbances may affect areas of the skin or the bodies ability to feel things. The area may feel numb or become unable to discriminate between hot and cold objects or sharp or dull objects. There may be just reduced feeling in the area where some feeling may be present but the level of sensitivity is very poor. The movement of limbs can be affected by these sensory problems because it can be difficult to move something you can not feel.

After a stroke the type of stroke exercises that form the basis of rehabilitation and recovery are very important. An understanding of how the brain works can help apply specific exercises and tailor a rehab approach to help the areas of the brain that have been effected. A specialized program can be more efficient and maximize recovery.

The serious curvature and twisting of spinal alignment resulting in pain, poor posture and misalignment is known as scoliosis. Because the spine is not straight, it puts undue strain and pressure on nerves and muscles, creating intense pain. The condition results in a reduction of lifespan of as much as a dozen years or more. Vestavia Hills scoliosis clinic is a leader in treatment without surgery or braces.

About 4 percent of children have scoliosis. Adult onset brings the total number of sufferers to as much as 25% amongst the adult population. The condition causes problems with the digestive system; it may result in shortness of breath. Scoliosis is almost always painful, especially serious in the spine, hips, extremities and neck.

The traditional treatment for scoliosis is to put the sufferer in a back brace or to do surgery. The condition is more common in girls than in boys. The back brace treatment may not be initiated until the curvature angle reaches 25 percent. Even then, the brace is only intended to take prevent the condition from getting worse. Numerous types of braces are available; some designed to be worn as much as 23 hours out of every 24.

If there is no observable improvement in spinal column alignment using the brace, surgery is the next step. A rod is inserted along the spine. The treatment fails in nearly 100% of the cases and doesn’t help to prevent the twisting of the spine.

The modern course of treatment is to use a combination of chiropractic adjustments combined with a rigorous course of posture correction and exercise training on the part of the scoliosis patient. The patient must accept responsibility of maintaining correct sitting, standing and reclining posture.

Only a few chiropractors make the effort to learn effective scoliosis treatment adjustment. Similarly, only a small percentage of patients are dedicated enough to work the posture retraining and exercises that are needed for improvement. Vestavia Hills Scoliosis clinic provides the chiropractic expertise, the patient must provide the dedication.

Significant scoliosis can be life shortening as well as painful. Vestavia Hills scoliosis clinic is dedicated to holistic treatment for this condition and others. More info on http://www.berrychiro.com/

Are you currently experiencing pain in your shoulder? If you do, its possible that you have torn your rotator cuff. There are a number of things that cause this area of the shoulder to tear. People that lead very active lives and take part in sports are at a higher risk for this sort of injury. While it’s certainly true that rotator cuff injuries can serious limit the arms movement, it’s not difficult to reverse the problem. There are specific exercises for rotator cuff injuries that will increase the range of motion, restore strength, and increase the endurance in the arm.

While we usually look at shoulder exercises as the exercises that involve free weights (dumbbell shoulder raises), or the ones that use the body weight (wide grip pushups), the stretching exercises for rotator cuff injuries are considered to be great exercises for the shoulders. This is particularly true for individuals that are suffering with an injury. Stretching exercises will slowly develop extra strength in the area of the rotator cuff and set the stage for the body to successfully perform more complex exercises later on. Stretches are normally done in a mild and light manner because harsher stretches can further aggravate an injury. When you start doing these shoulder stretches, be sure not to overdo it. Doing too much too soon will not bring faster results.

The common exercises for rotator cuff strength involve bending the arm and the elbow at a 90 degree angle and then raising it upwards and lowering while it remains bent. If you are new to these types of exercises, you do not have to add any weight to the exercise. You could simply perform the range of motion to help develop the needed strength. Perform these for a number of reps so that the body gets used to the movement. Even without the added weight, these exercises can definitely help improve the condition of the shoulder and set the stage for exercises for rotator cuff with progressive resistance.

When the time comes to add progressive resistance to the rotator cuff exercises, you don’t have to exclusively use free weights. It’s a good idea to start with elastic bands which are considered to be common tools for use with exercises for rotator cuff injuries. Once you have developed additional strength with the elastic bands, you will be able to start using free weights.

When doing the dumbbell exercises for rotator cuff injuries, the amount of weight that is used will vary depending on your current level of strength. Those that are currently suffering with an injury should not start out with a lot of weight. Using light cardio dumbbells is a good place to start. Another option would be to lift the weights with a moderate to high amount of reps. As usual, if you feel any pain or strain, stop the exercise immediately.

The exercises that are good for rotator cuff injuries are not nearly as complex as many people assume. The exercises should be started with a very light level of stress and the intensity should gradually be increased.
Even though many rotator cuff injuries can be treated with non-surgical approaches, your doctor might advise you to have rotator cuff surgery to fix the tears that are in the shoulder. The kind of surgery that will be performed on you will depend on many things, however no matter what kind of surgery you go through, the recovery for any rotator cuff surgery will be somewhat the same.

Day of the Operation

With the majority of these procedures, you will not have to stay in hospital overnight, as this is an outpatient surgery. Nevertheless, you must stay in the hospital until your shoulder pain can be handled with home medications. You will also wear a protective sling so your shoulder and arm muscles can rest and therefore speed the healing along faster.

Some tips to speed up rotator cuff surgery recovery during the first few days after the operation, which are very important in the later phases, include:

-Ease your pain by taking your pain medications as soon as you feel pain in your shoulder.

* Try different combinations of pain and anti-inflammation medicines under the guidance of your doctor.

-Use ice bags on your shoulder to reduce the pain and quicken healing.

-When sleeping, sleep in a partially seated position with your elbows pointing down.

Stages of Recovery

You should know that the stages of rotator cuff surgery recovery would depend on the situation of each patient when it comes to getting from one stage to the other. That is why it is best to adhere to your personalized rehabilitation program.

During the first phase of recovery, which can last for up to 6 weeks, you will be directed to perform passive motions only. Basically, this means the avoidance of any kind of work and/or stress on the rotator cuff tendons and muscles. In this case, your physical therapist will perform two things. First, he will move your repaired shoulder for you and, second, he will provide instructions on how to move your shoulders with the least possible muscle contractions.

In the second part, you will be asked to move your arm on your own though you must not move it against any resistance at all. This is named the active motion phase and can go on up to 12 weeks from the time you have surgery.

The third stage is considered the strengthening part of your recovery where you will concentrate on performing isolation exercises to give strength to muscles that have become weak because of lack of activity. This is the most important stage in rotator cuff surgery recovery because full muscle function can come back once this stage is completed well.

Throughout stage four, you can go back to using your shoulders as you always would. Certainly many things affect this stage that can go on up to 6 months after the operation and you will still have to follow the advice of your physician about going back to your old physical activities.

In conclusion, your commitment to rehabilitation, the size and location of the rotator cuff tear and physical condition will determine how well and how fast you can go through rotator cuff surgery recovery.

We all use our shoulders all the time. They help us to rotate our arms, bend them backwards and forward and even rotate them in a circle. The main muscle group which is responsible for providing this wide range of motion is the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff comprises of four muscles namely the Subscapularis, Teres Minor, Infraspinatus and the Supraspinatus. These muscles help in keeping this joint which comprises of a ball and a socket in place. Many a times these muscles may get injured or strained due to overuse, fall, excess weight training and other such activities. This causes the tearing of the rotator cuff which is one of the most painful conditions. If left unchecked, the problem can result in an irreversible injury. Therefore recognizing torn rotator cuff symptoms is the best way to prevent further damage.

Pain is usually a good indicator that you’ve injured your rotator cuff, and when that pain is toward the top and back of the shoulder or radiating down the entire arm, it usually indicates a more serious injury. This pain usually increases with movement such as lifting or swinging the arm-and it can even be problematic when you try to sleep because pressure on the area also results in pain. When pain killers and other common remedies can’t bring you relief, you may begin to suspect a torn rotator cuff.

Weakness will also accompany such an injury. You will start to lose strength in your arms-even for doing routine tasks like brushing your hair or getting dressed. That shoulder pain, combined with weakness in the arms, is a classic symptom of a torn rotator cuff.

If you hear noises when trying to move or rotate your arm, that’s another clear sign that something is seriously amiss. Popping, cracking, or grating sounds when using your arm or lifting and lowering your arm are not normal. Usually this is an indication of a torn rotator cuff.

The problem with many rotator cuff injuries is that they start out rather small as a negligible pain that goes unnoticed. Then it worsens with additional strain and overuse. Then, if you fall or sustain a different type of injury, you often feel the full force of the pain, weakening, and noises all at once. A torn rotator cuff can come on slowly or suddenly.

With age, most joints and muscles weaken. That’s why older adults tend to experience more rotator cuff injuries than younger people. After years of strain and excessive use, the muscles injure, strain, and tear easier than before. Sometimes the pain comes on so gradually and is addressed with over the counter pain medication that it is not until the pain becomes severe that the individual realizes the extent of the injury.

It’s important to treat a rotator cuff injury in its infancy-before it gets worse. Your doctor can help determine whether you have a torn rotator cuff and how to best treat it. Exercises and medications are just some of the options he will explore with you.

As you may well already know, tendons are strong fibrous tissues which connect the muscles to the bones of the body. In many cases, when the muscles and tendons are overworked it results in the tendons becoming inflamed. For example, a tennis player who uses his or her arm to perform repetitive movements may end up experiencing severe shoulder pain due to the tendons in the shoulder becoming injured. Fortunately, there are certain tendonitis exercises which one can do in order to prevent tendon injuries.

If you feel a sharp or really achy pain, some tenderness and swelling, or find that you are restricted from your usual form of movement; particularly in the shoulder, neck, elbow, and around the knee area. Then you have the symptoms of tendonitis. However, these are not all the area’s that you can experience pain; they are the most common places. Even with taking precautions such as doing some Tendonitis Exercises before you begin working out or doing anything that may overwork your tendons.

Interestingly enough, tendons can be found in 24 areas of the human body and each of those can become affected by tendonitis. Even so, the rotator cuff which is in the shoulder tends to be one of the most common forms of tendonitis. As such, one of the most highly recommended tendonitis exercises for the arm and shoulder requires you to stand up as straight as possible with both your arms at your side. From this position you should begin raising your arm until it reaches a 45 degree angle. During this exercise your arm should remain straight while you once again lower it to your side. Ideally, this exercise should be repeated as many times as possible, until such time that your arm becomes tired. At that point, you can begin doing the same exercise with the other arm. Again, once your arm begins to get tired, give it a break while you do the exercise once again with the first arm, and these exercises should be continued for at least ten minutes.

Most people have heard of Tennis Elbow which is another name for tendonitis in the elbow. The phrase became popular due to tennis players suffering from the inflammation and swelling in the elbows. However, tennis elbow is not restricted to tennis players. People that play other sports as well, such as carpenters, computer keyboard users, and many other professions. Soreness is not restricted to just the elbows; you may experience pain in the fingers as well as the wrists. A person may feel weakness in the lower arm and the hands. Although, you can purchase an elbow brace, Tendinitis Exercises are still very important. Exercises such as stretching and arm strengthening types are good for this type of injury. When you are lifting something position your hands so that your palms are always facing you.

Fortunately tennis elbow can in most cases be treated successfully at home, although if the pain has not started subsiding after two to three weeks then you should consider going to see a doctor. While many doctors will want to see an X-ray, these will not be able to show any adverse signs even if the tendonitis is severe. Above all, you should never begin tendonitis exercises at home unless you are confident that you can do them without causing further damage.
