Review For The Sanyo Model RX1 Relaxation Chair

A new breed of recliner is starting to show up on the market. These recliners feature what is called the zero gravity position. There are quite a number of zero gravity recliners but up till now most have only had a manual recline or a motorized recline. The new Sanyo RX- 1 gravity recliner comes with a powered recline as well as an air massage system.

A new marketing term being used for recliners is zero gravity. But what is zero gravity? This is a position used by NASA for launching astronauts into space. NASA found that by reclining the astronauts back they were able to better distribute the weight of their bodies across the surface area of their backs. Now many recliner manufacturers are adding zero gravity positions to their chairs.

The RX1 by Sanyo is the first such recliner to be released by them. It comes with a built-in remote control. The remote control is located underneath the right armrest.

There are a number of features which can be activated by the remote control. You can adjust the angle of the chair back or the leg rest. The leg rest and the chair back both have motor. They can be operated independently.

The look of the chair is rather industrial. It does not seem to be very refined and looks a bit mundane and boring. I was hoping for more of an eye-catching design for the money. One part of design that seemed overlooked was exposing the metal frame below the side panels. This just seems to be an oversight on the part of Sanyo.

One of the main features of the remote control is a zero gravity position button. With the touch of a button you can go to a preprogrammed zero gravity position. Normally, I like features like this but the zero gravity angle which was preprogrammed was not very comfortable for me.

This Sanyo recliner comes with an air massage system. The air massage system has seven airbags located throughout the chair. An air pump distributes air via solenoid valves to the different airbags to provide a compression massage.

There are two programs for the air massage system. One is called stretch which has firm pressure and the other is relaxed which has gentle pressure. Just choose the program you wish and the chair performs the air massage.

This powered recliner is covered in leather upholstery. It is soft to the touch and comfortable to sit in. I did like the headrest adjustment which allows you to move the angle of the headrest up to 30.

This chair comes with an automatic zero gravity position. However, it seemed that the position was not very comfortable for me. My knees seem to be bent at a strange angle which did not appeal to me.

I found I was better off using the independent controls to find that the right chair back angle. I would then raise the leg rest to a position that felt more comfortable for me. The automatic position for zero gravity may be good for some but just wasn’t the right position for me.

There is a home reset button. This is a nice feature in that it allows you to reset the chair to its normal position. Just select the home button and the chair back will raise up while simultaneously lowering the leg rest.

I was a little bit disappointed with the Sanyo RX-1 recliner. It certainly is not a cheap recliner and for the price I felt that some aspects of the design were not well thought out. Exposing the metal frame underneath the side panel is a little strange at best. The preprogrammed zero gravity position was not very comfortable and that is the whole point of this recliner. I think the Sanyo RX-1 is a good attempt but certainly is too pricey for the types of features it contains.
