There are thousands of different diets out there, each promising the same collection of results: massive weight loss, rapid results, and long-term health gains. While many diets offer all of those and more, it’s becoming a lost treasure as the fitness industry becomes more and more obsessed with the now, and less worried about the real results. With so many diets being sold off on broken promises, outright lies, and ridiculous claims, it’s important for anyone looking for a diet to do their fair degree of research. This quick guide is designed to familiarise you with what to look for, and what not to look for in a diet.

The best diets are backed up by some form of scientific research and controlled testing. While many diet advertisements are filled with convincing before and after pictures, it’s very difficult to treat these as anything more than a biased source. Many diet companies use pregnancy or illness photos as their ‘before’ material, and post after photos showing their diet participants in great shape. While many of these are real, it’s difficult to tell which are and which aren’t, which is why it’s so important for other signs of a diets legitimacy.

Many diet firms show testimonials in their advertisements. Although these can sometimes be an effective gauge of how well the diet actually works, you should look outside of the typical information sources when looking for signs of a good diet. In fact you need to consider two things:

1. The testimonials could have been paid for.

2. The experience of one person may not match yours.

With genetics playing such an important part in a persons weight loss, this becomes a second factor to consider in whether to believe in another persons experience. In truth the only testimonial you can believe in is your own.

To ensure the weight stays off at the end of your diet, then the best diets are ones that include some form of your lifestyle plan and standard diet. Try to choose a diet that includes all food groups and types of food. Do not ever go for a diet which relies 100% on the use of a food supplement product. While these supplements have their place, a diet based entirely around the use of supplements is a sure way to putting back on all the weight lost once the diet has ended.

To ensure that you gain long term weight loss and the health benefits that go with it you should look for these three things in a diet. Make sure that the diet has been subject to some form of controlled testing, this should have third party verification and testimonials and should contain all of the major food groups. It should not be reliant on supplements. Provided you stick to these principles and rules then choosing a great diet should not be that difficult. Just make sure that the diet you choose provides you with long term health gains not short term weight loss.
