Bad breath treatments vary based on the causes of the bad breath problem. A simple change in your regular habits can often remedy the situation. Here are some suggestions that you may find useful as bad breath solutions.
1. Reduce or eliminate dry mouth.
Xerostomia, better know as dry mouth is a common cause of bad breath. Undesirable bacteria can flourish if the inside of your mouth is usually in a dehydrated state. Drinking six to twelve glasses of water every day washes down left over food particles as it hydrates your mouth. Stop smoking and reduce the amount of alcohol that you consume. Increase the production of saliva by chewing sugarless gum. Since some medicines cause dryness, think of other ways to increase the level of moisture in your mouth.
2. Exercise effective oral hygiene.
Brush your teeth thoroughly and use dental floss following each meal. Don’t forget to brush the roof of your mouth and to scrape your tongue. You need to clean out all of the leftover food. Try not to use mouthwashes that contain alcohol. Instead, use Oil of Oregano on your toothbrush or as a mouthwash to help eliminate bad breath bacteria. A salt and water gargle can also be an effective deterrent. Have your teeth cleaned on a regular basis by your dentist to prevent plaque build-up.
3. Maintain a healthy diet.
Adding more vegetables, fruits and whole grains to your diet can go a long way in balancing overall body functions which can reduce or eliminate problems with smelly breath. Eat fewer proteins. Reduce the consumption of red meat in particular. Try not to eat foul-smelling foods like onions and garlic. Cut down on sugary and starchy foods and drinks.
4. Check for medical conditions that can cause bad breath.
Sometimes, bad breath shows up as a symptom of a medical condition that can be easily alleviated with the help of your doctor or dentist. Visit your doctor or dentist to eliminate problems such as tooth decay, sinus infections, diabetes or gum disease that can cause problems with breath odor.
